"The Game By Dave Johnson An audio play for Night Terrors. CAST: Host: Actor John: Actor Ashley: Actor Corkley: Actor VR Doc: Actor VR Asst: Actor Real Police #1: Actor VR Police #1: Actor Real Police #2: Actor VR Police #2: Actor CSI #1: Actor Computer voice: Actor Paramedic #1: Actor Paramedic #2: Actor PRODUCTION NOTE: The VR Police and Real Police may be played by the same actors. The audience should not be able to figure out which is real and which is the game until the end. HOST: (Says a few words about this episode.) OPENING: The story of a man lost in a virtual reality world of hit man and crime. SCENE ONE Sfx: Gun shot sound. A mans groan in pain, then the sound of a body falling to the ground. Police sirens can be heard from the distance. The sirens stop as a car drives up. The Police get out. The car doors open and close. (Ambience: Out door evening sounds.) VR Cop#1: Let’s get the scene roped off. Call off the rush for the ambulance. He is obviously dead… Poor fellow…. VR Cop#2: Poor fellow? What do you mean? This guy was a cold blooded murderer. This is the notorious De Omani. He makes the “Son of Sam” seem nice and neighborly. I am glad he is dead. Less work for us! VR Cop#1: After all these months of work tracking him down. To be killed by a mugger. Poetic justice! (To ambulance crew.) Take this scum away. (With distain.) VR Cop#2: You can’t cheat death. If we find the mugger we should thank him… (To the body.) Off to the morgue with you! VR Cop#1: Right! Good riddance. Sfx: The sounds of people shuffling feet can be heard. The body being picked up and loaded in to an ambulance for transport. The vehicle departs the scene. WALLA: Strange low mumbling. Unintelligible for a few seconds. END SCENE ONE SCENE TWO PRODUCTION NOTE: John’s character in the game is dead. He does not know this. He thinks he was knocked out. At this time John wakes up in a metal box in the morgue. Sfx: Transition music. Ambience music up and under. JOHN: (Confused) What! Where am I? (Voice is hollow sounding.) I can’t move! How long have I been out? Where did they take me? … (To self.) It’s cold in here. Sfx: The sound of a large morgue drawer opening. VR Doc: Let’s see what we have here? Hmmm. De Omani? You finally made it to my morgue. JOHN: Hay! (Yelling) What’s wrong with me? VR Doc: (Talking in to a mic.) The victim’s age is approximately thirty one years. Gun shot wound to the frontal aspect of the fore head. Gun shot wound to the mid-sternum…. VR Asst: Doctor… I can’t seem to shut his eyes... Also, look at the expression on his face? VR Doc: What do you mean? It’s blank. They are always blank stares. VR Asst: I could have sworn is was… Now it looks like terror! Terror in his eyes! JOHN: Hay! Why can’t you hear me? (scared) VR Doc: Never mind... You’re just imagining things. Not uncommon this time of night. Serves him right anyways. This guy was a monster! We all are safer now he is dead. Hand me that knife... Let’s open him up… I want to get the heart first. Then we will take a look at the brain… Sfx: Slurping sounds. Cutting sounds. JOHN: Noooooo! You can’t be working on me! Not me!! Sfx: Sound of the knife cutting the skin and a bone saw whirring. Muffled screams. END SCENE TWO SCENE THREE Sfx: Transition music. Ambience music up and under. Corkley: What’s going on? John are you okay? Oh my! John: Oh! …. Wow! That was sooo real! I need to play that scene again! Corkley: I don’t think so. You need to come to bed! Besides, you have to work tomorrow. It’s late. John: I’ll be there in a minuet. I want to get past this mugger. He is a level boss. Sfx: Door slams. Corkley: (Muffled. Sound coming from behind the bedroom door.) Good night! Sfx: Time passing music. Clock ticking. Sfx: Sounds of John screaming. Running sound. (Corkley runs to help. John is seizing.) Corkley: Take the VR helmet off! (SOUND: Helmet pulled off and dropped on floor.) (Crying) John are you okay! Oh my!, Oh my! Computer! Dial 9-1-1. Comp.: Dialing! (Sfx: dialing sound.) Send Police and ambulance to this residence. 1234 North Hollywood Drive, Hollywood, Ca……… Help is on its way! Corkley: John, close your eyes! I’ve got you….. I’ve got you! Sfx: Police and ambulance sirens can be heard as they arrive. Paramedic#1: It’s going to be okay. We will get him to the hospital. Tom! Help me! His eyes! His eyes! The pupil is blown. Anisecoria! Did he get hit in the head? Paramedic#2: I have no pulse. Start CPR! You bag’m and I’ll do compressions. Sfx: Sounds of the Paramedics placing John on the gurney and send him on his way to the emergency room. END SCENE TWO SCENE THREE Sfx: Sound of John feeling around inside of the morgue drawer. JOHN: Where am I...? What’s going on? Sfx: Foot steps. Unintelligible conversation getting closer. VR Doc: Let’s get this guy on the table. VR Asst: Yes Sir. …. Doc? VR Doc: What’s up? VR Asst: Take a look at this….. Do you see what I am seeing? JOHN: Hay! What happened to me! …. Why can’t you hear me? This is just like the game… Or am I still in the game? VR Doc: What are you talking about? I don’t see it. VR Asst: Tears are running out of his eyes! Sfx: Tension music up. JOHN: Doc! Nooo. I am alive! VR Doc: Well, I can tell you that this man is truly dead. So… Let’s get to work. We have a lot of stiffs to process tonight. END OF SCENE THREE SCENE FOUR Sfx: The sound of a woman screaming. Corkley: Help! I’m not dead! Sfx: Sound of people running towards Corkley. Ashley: Get that helmet off her! John: She is covered in blood! My wife is covered in blood! Ashley: Look for the wounds! Sfx: Sound of clothes being ripped of. John: Where is the blood coming from? Ashley: She’s dead John! John: I’d better call the police then… Oh! I am so excited! Come here babe! We can finally be together. (They embrace and kiss.) Sfx: Dials phone. John: Hello. Yes, we’ve had an accident here. I am afraid my wife committed suicide. SOUND: Music up. Transition music. END OF SCENE FOUR SCENE FIVE Sfx: Dinner music. Sound of a toast being made by John and Ashley. John: To you Ash, my love. For without you I could not be free to be with you. Ashley: Now I can relax… With her gone we can be open about our relationship. And we can’t be charged with polygamy. John: Well, that’s nice to know. (walks over to the wall.) Ashley: John….. John: Yes babe? Ashley: I don’t love you… (gun shot) Sfx: Body fall. John: Why? Ashley: John you and your wife were so stupid… Ha... Especially you! I just wanted your money. That’s all. Sfx: Tension music up and under. (Sound of electronic voice. The voice of Corkley.) Corkley: (disembodied voice. Distorted.) John! Help me! (The sound comes from the left speaker.) Ashley: Corkley? Is that you? Corkley: Ashley? Where am I? Ashley: Cork… I don’t know. Your voice is coming out of the left speaker! You are sooo good. Ha. Ha. Corkley: What do you mean? Ashley: I saw you die… That was some great acting. Corkley: That must mean…. I am trapped in the game. You see... I have no feeling. But I have power... Power to kill you! Sfx: Sound of electricity bolt. Sound of Ashley screaming. HOST: (Says some summery of the tale.) THE END"^^xsd:string
