Too afraid to slumber deeply, yet you must sleep non-the-less. SCENE ONE Mood music: Up and under. (Tense and foreboding.) Sara: (Tossing and turning in bed) Sigh…. Why is this happening to me? Why can’t I sleep? Sfx: Sound of door knob twisting and the door opening then shutting. Henry: (low) Sara, I’m back with your medicine. This should get you to sleep. Sara: Oh… Thanks’ babe… I don’t know what I would do with out you and my pills. If the nightmares would just go away… Oh! I can’t talk about it. Henry / Narrating: This sleep thing started two months ago. Before that we were a happy, newly wed, couple. No cares. Loving each other where and when we could. The night of the new moon changed all that. Now she only dozes off. She looks like the undead. The dark circles under her eyes. She hasn’t slept in weeks! Sara: Henry! Henry! (screaming) The room has changed! (to self) Why has the room changed... Do you feel that! Hear it? Smell it? Henry: Hear what… Sfx: Asthmatic breathing. Or the breathing of a terminally ill Tuberculosis patient. Hollow sounding Sara: (Rubbing eyes.) I can't explain… But, I am sure you must have heard the breathing. That horrid breathing! Henry: Honey, you were just asleep. You’ve been asleep, for ten minuets. Sara: (Trembling voice) It was all just a dream? (sobbing) Henry / Narrating: I gave her the pills. She drifted off to slumber. The next morning at breakfast, I asked how she slept. Sara: I was restless, even with the pills. And, I had a terrible dream. Henry: It might do you some good to talk about it. Sara: I dreamt I was in a large yard… It was day. The sun was high in the sky. Then it turned to a blood red full moon. The yard changed to a cemetery. I noticed how lush the lawn seemed. I thought of how the grass was morbidly feeding on the carrion below. Its horrid diet made me cringe with terror. I could hear the moans of the dead in complaint. Suddenly a black figure appeared to me. Then I woke up. Henry: That’s a terrible dream! You sure you are alright? Sara: It seemed more real than before. I woke up feeling like I was not real. Henry: You have had this dream before? Sara: Every night and every time I doze off. (Yawn.) I hate to sleep. Henry: Can’t say that I blame you. Henry / Narrating: (Close) Every time she awoke from a nap. She accused me of changing things around the house. I was seriously contemplating psychological intervention… One day I found my wife sleep walking. She was headed for the medicine cabinet. I tried to stop her…. She had an abnormal strength, an evil look on her face… The look was as if a different soul inhabited her slumber. END OF SCENE ONE SCENE TWO Henry / Narrating: (close) Last night I woke up to see a hooded dark figure standing beside my bed. I turned my light on to see Sara standing, dressed in black, with a bloody knife in her right hand. Our cat lying dismembered on the floor. Sara was still asleep! This made me vary uneasy. I had to do it! I had to call for help. I quickly grabbed the knife. Henry: (Talking slowly) Sara… Sara… Wake up baby. I have to take you to the emergency room. This has gone on long enough! Sfx: Sound of Sara collapsing on the bed. Transition music HOSPITAL ROOM Sara: Nurse? Where am I? Nurse: You are in the hospital. Sara: How long have I been here? Where is my husband? Nurse: You just came here from the emergency room… Your husband is in the waiting room. You want me to get him? Sara: Yes. Yes please. Thank you. Sfx: Sound of Nurse walking out of the room to the lounge. Henry: Are you Sara’s Nurse? Nurse: Yes I am. I was just coming to see you. Henry: Can I see her now? Nurse: Right this way. Sfx: Walking to room. Door opens. Ambient music. Low and under. Sara: Henry! Thank you Lord!... What happed to me? Henry: I found you standing at the end of our bed with a bloody knife. Sara: What!?... Whose blood was it?... Did I hurt someone? Tell me! (To self) How can I do something like that… (scared) I can’t remember! Henry: Sara, you didn’t hurt me but you did kill the cat. So I felt that I needed to get you to the hospital.. You need help. I don’t know how to help you. Is it the dreams? Narrating: Sara was shaking. I put a blanket around her… She said she was hot. I could tell she was loosing it. Her paranoia scared of the Nurses. The Police became involved as well as Social workers. END OF SCENE TWO SCENE THREE Sfx: Transition music up and under. Sound of phone ringing. (cell phone) Henry: Hello? (yawn)(ring)(still half asleep) It’s three a.m…(ring) Who can be calling? Oh! The hospital… (to the phone) Yes… I am he… Is she… Okay I will be right there. Narrating: I was called by my wife’s nurse. She said they had a problem… She was out of control. I needed to get to her… Fast! When I arrived at the hospital room. I found her sedated. Blood was being cleaned from her walls. Dr. Phee: Mr. Baughman, I am so glad you are here. Your wife had a episode. The Charge Nurse said she heard a scream. Sara was in terror of some person standing at the end of her bed. I had to restrain her and sedate her for her own good. We are not equipped to handle psychiatric patients. We are a level one hospital. Henry: Wait… She is seeing people? Where did the blood come from? Is she hurt? Dr. Phee: I… I don’t know where the blood came from. Your wife isn’t hurt. That’s all I have to say about that. Any more questions need to be directed to the Police. As far as your wife… I think she needs to be transferred to The Pickman Institute. It is a Psychiatric specialty hospital. In Arkham Massachusetts. Henry: I want to do what is best for her. Dr. Phee: Yes. I know you’ll want to be close by. I took the liberty of making a tentative reservation for you at Pickman Hall. It’s like a Ronald McDonalds House. In the mean time you can stay here with your wife ‘til morning. Henry: Thanks Dr. Phee. Sfx: Walking sound off to the distance. Door shuts. Nurse: Dr. Phee? Dr. Phee: Yes?... Nurse: When is that woman going to leave here. She is, I hate to say it. Creepy. She looks like she is dead. If she wasn’t breathing and have a pulse, I’d say she is dead! Dr. Phee: The ambulance will be here no later than ten this morning. END SCENE THREE SCENE FOUR Figure 1. Pickman Hospital, Miskatonic U. Copyright © 2006 Midian used with permission. Sfx: Depressing music up and under. Transition music. Henry / Narrating: After a forty minuet ride in the ambulance I was getting anxious to see the hospital. My heart sank when we drove up to the entrance. The hospital looks neglected. Not what I had hoped for. The day was dreary and cold. New England fall weather. Gray skies and dead leaves on the ground. We were greeted by a Nurse in the traditional 1950’s era nurses hat and white uniform with skirt. A analog watch dangled from her shoulder. The accepting physician was dressed in equally strange attire. Sfx: Ambulance driving to a stop and the door opens. Out door sounds. Under. Dr. Carla Hill: Welcome Mr. Baughman. You and your wife will find this place of rest to your satisfaction. We rather pride ourselves on our cheer… Do you have any concerns that I may ease your mind while your wife is taken to her new quarters? Henry: Yes, when may I see my wife? Dr. Hill: Vary soon… But first, let’s get you to your room. Henry / Narrating: Dr. Hill ushered me into the hospital. The front entry was gloomy. The Nurses scurried about like cats doing their good works. Their movements seemed stilted. I was lead down the hall towards what sounded like a cafeteria. The floor looked rather clean but the walls were lifeless. Bizarre sounds from ahead made me shudder. I wasn’t sure if this is the right place for Sara. Moments later, we turned a corner and into a locked door. A sign on the portal said; ‘Pickman Hall. Off limits to patients.’ The good Doctor opened the lock and showed me in. Dr. Hill: Mr. Baughman, Humphries will check you in. Dinner is at eight o’clock in the main staff dining hall. You are welcome to join in the feast. Humphries will show you where the room is… Good evening. Henry: Good evening. Humphries: Right this way sir. You are in room 202. The Hospital is off limits to the guests… Accept during visiting hours. Henry: What are the visiting hours? Humphries: Eight a.m. to ten p.m. Here is your room and key. Have a pleasant stay. Henry: Well then. I’ll go see my wife… Humphries: No… You can’t do that… Not today. Henry: What! What do you mean? Why can’t I see her? Humphries: Dr. Hill has a strict policy… No visitors for forty-eight hours. Not even family members… I will call you at dinner. Sfx: Door shuts and locks. Henry / Narrating: Humphries is an odd fellow. Dressed like a butler he had a slow gate and seemed to favor his right leg. After he handed me the key…I noticed a withered left hand. He walked to the front desk. ‘He must be the Concierge.’ I thought to myself. END OF SCENE FOUR END OF PART ONE"^^xsd:string
